California SR22 Insurance

A California SR22 insurance policy is a type of auto insurance policy required for California drivers after a DUI related offense by the DMV and the courts. In California it is required for a minimum of 3 years after a drunk driving conviction.

The SR22 policy serves as an agreement between the California Department of Motor Vehicles and the SR22 provider that requires the insurance company to immediately notify the CA DMV should the insurance company not be providing insurance for the driver anymore. This could be due to several reasons:

1. A lapse in coverage. Your California SR22 insurance policy could lapse due to missing a payment or even just being late making a payment.

2. Termination of your coverage. If the insurance company decides that you are too high of a risk due to maybe another accident and/or drunk driving offense.

3. You switch SR22 providers. Yes even if you switch SR22 insurance companies they are still required to file a Notice of Cancellation of California Insurance Proof Certificate, SR26/SR1PF (Rev. 4.91). This will tell the DMV that your relationship with the SR22 provider has ended.

Who Provides California SR22 Insurance?

Typically the larger national auto insurance companies don't do SR22 policies for two main reasons; first they don't like to assume the risk that 'high risk' policies involve and second they don't want to deal with the extra paperwork and regulations required of insurance companies that handle SR22 insurance policies.

What this means is that you'll have to seek out smaller companies and insurance brokers who specialize in this type of insurance.
